HISTORY
The Sydney Schubert Society Inc. was founded in 1953 by Paul and Norma Williams. The Society is dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of the work of Franz Schubert as well as the music of Schubert’s time. Past presidents include Dr. Robert Gay and Dr. Anthony Ernst.
Since its foundation, the Sydney Schubert Society has presented more than 300 Schubertiades. These concerts revive the spirit of the gatherings of Schubert’s friends in which many of the composer’s works were first performed. Each Schubertiade is introduced with reference to the cultural and musical importance of the program to Schubert and his work by the president of the Society and curator of its programmes. The Sydney Schubertiades aim to preserve an informal context which characterised audience gatherings of the original Schubertiades in the early 19th century.
